Yacob and the Patriots are one of the favorites in the Catholic League this season.

Yosef Yacob is a senior guard for Archbishop Carroll, who are 4-0 after wins against Rustin, Church Farm, Douglas and Malvern Prep. Carroll faces a struggling Malvern Prep team on Saturday, who are clearly in a rebuilding year. Yacob took the time to talk with Philahoops High’s Teddy Bailey about the upcoming season and beyond for the Binghamton commit and Patriots.

Philahoops High: Why did you choose Binghamton and who else was recruiting you?

Yosef Yacob: I chose Binghamton because I was extremely close to the coaching staff and they were recruiting me the hardest. Other schools that were recruiting me were Rider, St. Francis, UNH, and Albany.

PH: What goals do you have for your college career?

YY: I want to be Freshman of the Year in my conference (MAAC) and I also want to be an all-conference player. The biggest goal I hope to achieve is to make it to the NCAA tournament.

PH: How would you describe your game to someone who hasn’t seen you play?

YY: I would describe myself as a smart point guard who can create for myself and others. I feel that I’m a pretty good defender as well.

PH: Who has been the biggest influence on your game and how have they helped you?

YY: The biggest influence in my life is my brother. He was the one who got me started with basketball and has been there for me since day one. He helps me understand the game more and always lets me know what aspects of the game I can improve in.

PH: What areas of your game are you hoping to strengthen this season?

YY: This season I’m hoping to improve in shooting off the dribble and being aggressive all game.

PH: What is the main goal/expectation for Carroll basketball this season?

YY: My main goal for my team is to win a championship.

PH: If Carroll is going to have a successful season, what will they need to do?

YY: For us to be successful we have to play hard defense and play with a lot of intensity.

PH: Who is the best player in the Catholic League that nobody knows about?

YY: Other than me, my teammate Derrick Jones.

PH: If you had one message for kids in grade school coming up, what would it be?

YY:  I would tell them to never stop working and keep trying to improve in every aspect of the game. There’s no such thing as a perfect player so there’s always room to improve.

PH: Finally, what games do you have marked on your calendar for this season?

YY: All the big catholic league games!
